Flexible Connect Therapy in Texas: Who can benefit from text-based therapy?
Not everyone has the time, privacy, or desire to sit on a video call every week to work on their mental health. Asynchronous therapy or Flexible Connect Therapy therapy gives you a way to get real, licensed clinical support through secure written messaging — on your schedule. We know Texas is huge and while we are Houston based and can service from Sugarland to The Woodlands, that is just the start. With the ability to be virtual and using technology we can also service the Dallas/Forth Worth, Frisco, Southlake, Midland, Odessa, and College Station just to name a few. Wherever you are in Texas and you have internet service we can reach you.
At Renewed Hope Counseling Center, PLLC, our text-based and hybrid video therapy is built for people who want consistent, professional support without the friction of traditional weekly appointments. Below, we’ll walk through who text therapy tends to work best for, what it can help with, and why so many Texans are choosing it as their entry point into therapy.

Who Flexible Connect Therapy| Text Therapy Works Well For
Must be 18 years of age or older and in the state of Texas when sending messages.
busy professionals and working parents
If your schedule doesn’t leave room for a standing weekly appointment, text therapy lets you check in, process a hard day, or work through a recurring stressor between meetings, during a lunch break, or after the kids are asleep — without missing work or rearranging childcare.
Texans in Rural or Underserved Areas
The majority of Texas counties are designated mental health professional shortage areas, and many rural communities such as Boerne, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville, have few or no local therapists at all. If the nearest licensed counselor is an hour or more away, online text therapy removes the drive entirely — you just need a phone or computer and an internet connection.
College Students and Young Adults
Younger adults are the fastest-growing group of therapy users and are especially comfortable communicating by text. Whether you are in Waco at Baylor University, San Antonio at Trinity University or Fort Worth — TCU (Texas Christian University) it can be difficult for students juggling class schedules, part-time work, and unpredictable free time, message-based therapy fits naturally into a routine already built around a phone.
People Who Process Better in Writing Than Speaking
Some people find it easier to be honest, specific, and reflective when writing rather than speaking out loud in real time. If you’ve ever drafted a text three times before sending it, or found journaling more clarifying than talking something through, text therapy may feel more natural than a traditional session.
Clients Looking for a More Affordable Entry Point
Text therapy is often a lower-cost alternative to weekly in-person, self-pay sessions, making it a practical option if cost or lack of insurance coverage has kept you from starting therapy.
Individuals Exploring Identity or Life Transitions
Whether you’re navigating a career change, a move, a breakup, retirement, or questions about identity, text therapy offers steady, judgment-free support you can return to as things unfold — not just during a scheduled hour.
Clients Continuing Care at a Lower Level of Support
If you’ve completed more intensive treatment and are looking for ongoing, lighter-touch support to maintain your progress, text therapy can serve as a flexible next step.
How Flexible Connect Therapy works
- Review the clinicians on our website
- Schedule your consultation to see if you are a good fit
- Choose a subscription and make your first payment
- That’s it, you can start communicating with your therapist via secure messaging, video, or both.
All communication happens through SimplePractice, a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform used for messaging, scheduling, and billing. Services are self-pay only and available exclusively to residents physically located in Texas.
You can choose a text-only tier or a hybrid tier that adds one or two live video sessions per month if you’d like some face-to-face time alongside messaging support.
Should things change and you find one month you’d like a video session we do offer an add on option for just that month.
We offer a dedicated licensed clinician (LPC-S, LPC’s, LPC-Associates) to aid you in your journey providing a personalized and therapeutic relationship.
What Flexible Connect Therapy Can Help With
Common reasons clients reach out include:
Ongoing maintenance support after more intensive treatment
Everyday anxiety, stress, and worry
Low-Mild depression
Social anxiety
Life transitions — new jobs, moves, divorce, retirement
Relationship and communication challenges
Parenting stress
Grief and loss
Identity exploration, including LGBTQ+-affirming support
Burnout and work-life balance
Building coping skills, mindfulness, and healthier thought patterns
Habit change, procrastination, and motivation
Text-based therapy (or online text therapy) is especially effective for concerns that are stable and reflective in nature — not situations requiring immediate, real-time crisis response.
Why Flexible Connect Therapy Is Beneficial
Flexibility. There’s no fixed weekly time slot to protect. You reach out when something comes up, and your therapist responds within scheduled windows — support that fits around your life instead of the other way around.
Privacy. No waiting room, no video call to find a quiet room for. You can message your therapist from nearly anywhere.
Time to reflect. Writing gives you a moment to think before you respond, which can lead to more honest and organized communication than a live conversation sometimes allows.
A written record you can revisit. Unlike a spoken session, your conversation stays in the app. Clients often find it helpful to scroll back and see how far they’ve come, or reread something their therapist said during a hard week.
Greater access across Texas. Because everything happens online through a secure platform, where you live in Texas doesn’t limit who you can work with — a meaningful difference for residents of counties with few or no local mental health providers.
A lower-barrier way to start therapy. For many people, the idea of an hour-long, face-to-face session feels like a bigger first step than they’re ready for. Text therapy offers a lower-pressure way in.

Meet The Therapists

Dr. Katrina Landry, PhD, LPC-S
Dr. Landry is the founder and supervising clinician of Renewed Hope Counseling Center, a licensed professional counselor supervisor with clinical experience across individual, couples, and family therapy.
She brings the same structure to written work that she brings to a scheduled session: defined goals, consistent follow-through, and direct feedback. Text-based therapy carries one particular clinical advantage — it creates a record you can return to, making patterns easier to track and progress easier to review over time. The format suits adults managing demanding schedules and those who prefer to reflect before responding.

Not everyone says what they mean out loud. Some people think better in writing — where there’s time to find the words, and no one is watching your face while you find them. That’s the space Flexible Connect Therapy creates.
James works with adults across Texas, including veterans and minority men who have spent years being told to handle it on their own. His work draws on cognitive behavioral therapy: naming the thought patterns driving the stress, then building something more useful in their place. In text, that happens one exchange at a time, on your schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Flexible Connect Therapy as effective as in-person therapy? For many non-crisis concerns — anxiety, stress, life transitions, and similar reflective work — text-based therapy can be an effective and clinically appropriate format. Your fit is confirmed through a short screening process before services begin.
Is Flexible Connect Therapy covered by insurance? No. Renewed Hope Counseling Center operates on a self-pay basis and does not bill insurance for this service. A superbill can be provided on request for possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement is not guaranteed.
How quickly will my therapist respond? Your therapist responds according to a scheduled messaging cadence rather than in real time. This is not a live chat service, and it’s not intended for situations requiring an immediate response.
Can I add video sessions to Flexible Connect Therapy? Yes. Clients on the Text Therapy tier can add one or two video sessions in a given month, or switch to a Hybrid tier that includes video sessions as part of the ongoing monthly plan.
Is Flexible Connect Therapy available if I don’t live in Texas? No. Because of state licensure requirements, Flexible Connect Therapy is available only to adults who reside in Texas and are located in Texas while receiving services. At enrollment, you will confirm your Texas residency and agree to be located in Texas while receiving services.
Is Flexible Connect Therapy appropriate for a mental health crisis? No. Text therapy is not equipped for crisis intervention. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.
