Is Text Therapy Right for You?

Text Therapy in Texas: Who can benefit from it?

Not everyone has the time, privacy, or desire to sit on a video call every week to work on their mental health. Asynchronous therapy or Text therapy gives you a way to get real, licensed clinical support through secure written messaging — on your schedule. We know Texas is huge and while we are Houston based and can service from Sugarland to The Woodlands, that is just the start. With the ability to be virtual and using technology we can also service the Dallas/Forth Worth, Frisco, Southlake, Midland, Odessa, and College Station just to name a few. Wherever you are in Texas and you have internet service we can reach you.

At Renewed Hope Counseling Center, PLLC, our text-based and hybrid video therapy is built for people who want consistent, professional support without the friction of traditional weekly appointments. Below, we’ll walk through who text therapy tends to work best for, what it can help with, and why so many Texans are choosing it as their entry point into therapy.

Who Text Therapy Is Not Right For

Online Text Therapy is not equipped for crisis intervention or emergency response. It is not appropriate for active suicidal or homicidal thoughts, psychiatric emergencies, active psychosis, manic episodes, psychotic episodes, panic attacks, self-harm, mania requiring hospitalization, medically unstable eating disorders, domestic violence, or active substance withdrawal or overdose.

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.

Is text therapy as effective as in-person therapy? For many non-crisis concerns — anxiety, stress, life transitions, and similar reflective work — text-based therapy can be an effective and clinically appropriate format. Your fit is confirmed through a short screening process before services begin.

Is text therapy covered by insurance? No. Renewed Hope Counseling Center operates on a self-pay basis and does not bill insurance for this service. A superbill can be provided on request for possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement is not guaranteed.

How quickly will my therapist respond? Your therapist responds according to a scheduled messaging cadence rather than in real time. This is not a live chat service, and it’s not intended for situations requiring an immediate response.

Can I add video sessions to text therapy? Yes. Clients on the Text Therapy tier can add one or two video sessions in a given month, or switch to a Hybrid tier that includes video sessions as part of the ongoing monthly plan.

Is text therapy available if I don’t live in Texas? No. Due to licensure requirements, services are available only to clients who are physically located in Texas at the time of each text exchange or video session.

Is text therapy appropriate for a mental health crisis? No. Text therapy is not equipped for crisis intervention. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.
